Mastering the Dynamics of Innovation
Published in Paperback by Harvard Business School Press (September, 1996)
Author: James M. Utterback
Average review score:

Scholarly analysis in an eminently readable enjoyable book
James Utterback has achieved the difficult goal of taking careful scholarship, drawing useful conclusions and presenting the whole package in a highly enjoyable book. He makes a major contribution by distinguishing between product innovation and process innovation and shows how and why the former is likely to come from outside the established industry players, while the latter is more likely to come from inside.

In the process he reaches back into history and covers industries ranging from pond ice to memory chips. Combining his explanation with concepts with Geoffrey Moore's "Crossing the Chasm" provides a powerful means of understanding where innovation comes from and what the barriers are to its success. Utterback's book goes beyond that. It also calls into serious question the idea (posited by Moore and others) that today's "high tech" cycle of innovation is fundamentally different from earlier innovative cycles in other industries. All in all, Utterback uses industrial history in a low-key, fact-based book that shines a clear, bright light on what drove yesterday's technology developments -- and today's.

an understanding of innovation
This book is written in a concise manner that is straightforward and easy to understand. Utterback explains how innovation has evolved over the years, using great examples from a variety of assembled and non-assembled industries. One side note, I found that this book was worth the cover price for the history of industries he mentions alone. Some of the products and industries mentioned in this book include: Incandescent light bulbs, Typewriters, Glass, photography, and Ice. This book is loaded with invaluable nuggets of insight, it is impossible to due it justice in a book review. I highly recommend reading it.

Great stories and data on innovation
Prof. Utterback spent over twenty years studying 20+ industries as they experienced dramatical technological change, trying to understand who were the market leaders before the change, who were the market leaders afterwards, and why?

He studies markets as varied as cooling (the harvested ice industry in the late 1800s), lighting (gas lighting giving way to incandescent lighting giving way to flourescent lighting), typewriters (manual typewrites giving way to electrics giving way to dedicated word processors giving way to PCs), and plate glass.

He observes that the market leaders prior to a technology change rarely are market leaders after the change, primarily because the entrepenuers and innovators are squeezed out of older companies by "incrementalists". This gave me a lot of encouragement and insight into pushing hard on Internet Explorer back in 1994..1996 at Microsoft, and also I think explains why Microsoft is struggling now.

Mobile Guerrilla Force: With the Special Forces in War Zone D
Published in Mass Market Paperback by St. Martin's Press (April, 1997)
Author: James C. Donahue
Average review score:

A stunnigly real look into the minds of our Special Forces
I have read "Mobile Guerilla Force", "BlackJack 33", and "BlackJack 34" All three of the books are an amazing read, not the typical blood, mud and tears, hovever there is unfortunately a historically real amount of that as well. Not only do you get a sence of what life was like as a special operations operator in VietNam, but the laughs as well as the sorrows of day to day life in VietNam. The author also opened a porthole into the relationship that was built with the indiginous peoples that fought along side the Mobile Geurilla Force whose heroism is nothing short of legondary. As a reader, one can see the author settle into a comfortable writing niche' and progressively make each page seemingly more personal and real ("in the first person" if you will) to the reader. More stories like these need to be told of the triumphs of American Gi's in VietNam.
POW, MIA, VFW, Thankyou, you are not forgotten!
Sincerely Jc

MGF - What you would expect from Mr. Donahue
I have read at least 2 dozen books on combat in Vietnam and this is one of the best. The book is very well written. The author really makes you feel as if you are walking in the jungle of Vietnam side by side members of the mobile guerrilla force.

The Forbidden Zone has been penetrated.
This is one of the most exciting books that I've read about the war in Vietnam. Donahue puts you right there amongst the brave and loyal Khmer soldiers and the cunning and equally committed Viet Cong. Having spent some time in the area written about, I can attest to the accuracy of his brilliantly portrayed environment. This book is going into my permanent collection along with Blackjack-33 and Blackjack-34. Well written book that you can't put down until the end.

Mystery Stories : A Journey Through the Rosary
Published in Paperback by Crown of Mary Publishing Company (01 June, 2000)
Author: James L. Carney
Average review score:

Just what I was looking for!
This is fantastic! Anyone who prays the Rosary regularly knows that sometimes you really need some "meat" for your meditation. And most of the Rosary booklets out there are just that - booklets, which are fine in their way but don't really give you much to think about. I prefer to have LOTS of material to chew over while I'm meditating on each mystery, so much that I can't possibly finish it all in one sitting. There is an average of 15 pages devoted to EACH mystery, which provides a very substantial meal! I'd compare it to Kevin Orlin Johnson's "Rosary : Mysteries, Meditations, and the Telling of the Beads" - if you liked that one you'll love this one too!

Well -researched, informative
This book if full of information to make the mysteries of the rosary come alive. It is very well researched and documented. I highly recommend it to anyone, not just Christians and not just Catholics.

Shedding Light on the Mysteries
James L. Carney's "Mystery Stories: A Journey through the Rosary" is an important work. There is nothing else like it on the market -- no one has made such a devoted effort to bring the mysteries of the Rosary to life in such a meaningful, genuine, and spiritually-uplifting manner. His book has given me new insights into the real people that populate Scripture -- from Jesus, Mary, and Peter to smaller characters such as Elizabeth or Pontius Pilate. So often in the past I viewed these figures as two-dimensional, "holier than holy" characters that lived in a "different" world than my own -- and I subsequently found myself struggling with my Scriptural readings. Mr. Carney's book has helped me bridge this gap.

The author's research is meticulous, his prose clear, and his passion evident. His reflection questions at the end of each chapter are great aids for personal meditation, small faith communities, or catechesis. The Sorrowful Mysteries are particularly powerful as meditative reflections for the Lenten season -- I would recommend these for Christians of all stripes.

This book has expanded my appreciation and understanding of the Rosary, of Scripture, and of my own relationship with Christ. "Mystery Stories" will remain an essential element of my prayer life for years to come. I commend Mr. Carney for his inspired effort, and encourage readers to take a chance on this book.

Novell's CNE® Clarke Notes¿ for NetWare® 5 Administration: Course 560
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (September, 1999)
Author: David James, IV Clarke
Average review score:

Just as the author claims
This book does just as the author claims. It chisels down all necessary knowledge of NetWare 5 CNA without allot of wasted words like most THICK Technical books, which I despise. I have worked with NetWare since version 3.11 and this book is accurate to the T. I also recommend using Big Red self test exam software to compliment this book for the serious CNA exam prep.

The best NetWare 5 Admin study book!
I just passed the NetWare 5 Administration test #50-639. This is by far the best book I read in preparing for the test. Simple, straight forward, and easy to understand. No superfluous BS, just what you need to know to understand NetWare 5 and pass the test. Definitely well worth the money!

Good summary
I found this to be an excellant summary - good for reviewing and consolidating study done elsewhere - NB this is a study NOTE book - if you haven't done the CNA course or worked through some self-paced material then do that first. Also - this book is for exam 50-645 (nw 5.0) which was fine for me but be aware that it's on the retirement track now so you should probably go for NW5.1. I'm definitly going to search out "Clarke" material for further CNE papers

A poem for every occasion

There was always a poem for me to copy for every occasion that I would write to someone, need a speech for school, or to enclose in a birthday or special occasion card. The style of each poem was universal. I NEED THIS BOOK! And now I can't find it anywhere. I'd be happy to get a second hand copy if nothing else. Still searching in Oregon but worth the effort!

River of Earth
Published in Paperback by University Press of Kentucky (July, 1978)
Author: James Still
Average review score:

The heart and soul of Appalachia
James Still has exquisitely and intricately chronicled what it is like to be born, live, and die in the hills of eastern Kentucky. Natives of the region will read the book and feel attached to the book if by nothing else but the geography. Others will be drawn into the book by the sincerity and realism of the characters. Still, the poet laureate of Kentucky, beautifully relates the attachment of eastern Kentuckians to the mountain soil in spite of the poverty and hard living that they must endure. More than that, however, it is a story of inspiration and coming of age. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Simply wonderful...
In my opinion, River of Earth deserves to be celebrated among the best works of 20th century fiction. James Still not only evokes the setting in depression era Kentucky, but he also captures the spirit of the people and the point of view of his young narrator. This is not a sentimental rendering of an idealized past but rather a pure slice of life cut down to the bone with a real sharp knife. The story is full of humor and hard times, and the language is akin to poetry. "Where ARE we bound on this river of earth?"

Well writen: It made me get in touch with my mountain roots.
Both my grandfathers mined coal in eastern KY. My parents and I were born there too. I have always had a longing to know more about life during my grandfathers' lifetimes. Now thanks to James Still and his Book,"River of Earth" that longing has been filled. Thank you Mr. Still.

Kundalini: The Evolutionary Energy in Man
Published in Paperback by Shambhala Publications (December, 1971)
Authors: James Hillman, Frederic Spiegelberg, and Gopi Krishna
Average review score:

experiencing kundalini
A very honest trip through kundalini awakening, the author has avoided to tell us precisely what happened exactly before that very day, but you have a very clear understanding of the process.
Carefull attention is required, nothing forced like for Gopi, however his experience show us there will be a lot of awaken people in the future.
Be wise don't overdo it, awakening comes with a change in the brain and spinal apparel, consciousness has to shine within your body, needs a good and stable mind and body . Do read Osho rasjneesh books too, as meditation is learning to die going through the process of dying brings real life within you.

How come that countries with "Gurus" and and a tradition of mental mastery and such are dirt poor, have lots of thieves, child labour and much else. Why isn't it that, at least one time in a tousand years one of these gurus was clever enough, and free from ego to mastermind a regime that could create decent conditions. How come that countries like Norway or Denmark have better conditions and less crime? They were berserks! Think about it?

Tale of the Barbarian
I wouldn't say I am person to read fantasy books nor a ficton reader to begin with. My father has a huge collection of books. I was looking through his books one time I saw four books with really cool covers. I was looking at the books to read one for a High School Book Report. So I picked up the first one because of its awesome cover. Read the book in one day! Couldn't put it down. Then I read the 2nd one the next day and so forth till all four were done. It's a shame the books are not easy to come by any more. I was fortunate my dad had already had all four. This is by far the best series I have ever read or will read!

the best series i have ever read
i am a fantasy buff to the max and have read literally thousands of books in the fantasy sci fi genre. i own quite a bit of money and spend the majority of it on books. but one day while looking in a used book store in san antonio texas i purchesed the death dealer series and have not bought another book since. i feel now that no book will ever compare in shear brillance of imagery and wording. James Silke is a true artist and genius. i would do anything to read more books from him. i have tried to purchase the mint condition set of these books but to no avail. and to this day my original set are my most prized possesions. if Mr Silke is reading this please publish more on the tale of Gath of Baal and Robin Lakehair and Brown John. i would seriously do anything to read more stories. i had thought at one time you may write an off branch of the years Gath left Robin between book 2 and 3. but i am afraid not. to anyone looking for the perfect book this whole series is it

thank you, kyle whiting

You put it up and its stays there, this book is magnificent
I am not an avid reader who spends time reading books. I like to do other things with my time. Then one day i was at the library and saw the cover. I said,"I'll get this one." Before you know it I had finished the book in 2 days, no other fantasy books have ever kept me readin like this except for the dragonlance books and so i looked for the 1st and 3rd books in the series to complete my readin but to no avail. All in all this book is fantastic, so if you are looking for a great fantasy novel this is the one to get. Dont take my word for it, read the other reveiws(and the book)and you'll see what i mean.

Hard Core Common Sense
I am an Ex-Car Man myself and am now in Banking. This book brings back memories of Saturday sales meetings on the tar mac.
This guy doesn't pull any punches and makes sense. This book will make you money if you have the "Guts" to put it in to practice.

Kevin Jolly

In Your Face Advice You Can Use
Mr. Ziegler writes like he speaks. He's in your face, straightforward and unapologetically candid about his rags to riches story. He starts by noting that wealth and prosperity are not the same thing, then explains the difference by taking the reader through the four "pillars of prosperity" that have made him the successful entrepreneur he is today. He is generous in offering very specific tactics and techniques anyone can use to achieve similar success. If you're serious about your business and want to attain or retain a lifestyle beyond your dreams, read this book. It won't take long to read, but the ideas can be used forever.

Not For The Faint Of Heart
This book is a must-read for anyone who truly wants to make things happen in his or her life and business. It is true that few people will do what it takes to be successful in their own business and James spells it out exactly. While I have reached a certain level of success, it was a huge reminder that we must continually raise the bar and set new standards of excellence in our lives and work. Otherwise, we're destined to fall back into certain comfort zones. The real wisdom and strategies contained in this book will lead people to a new level of success!

Road Rage and Aggressive Driving: Steering Clear of Highway Warfare
Published in Paperback by Prometheus Books (October, 2000)
Authors: Leon James and Diane Nahl
Average review score:

A great supplement to driver's education
I've been reading this book over and over during the last few months, and there's more information than one can expect about automobile driving. Authors James and Nahl clearly permeate their psychological knowledge throughout the pages, which unfortunately, is a mild setback in the audience they would hope to reach. Clearly, however, they have identified nearly every aggressive thought that some drivers are exhibiting as daily behaviors. There are charts and worksheets galore, way more than I believe the average driver is willing to commit time to study and fill in. That's the problem.

After driving, whether or stressful or not, few of us want to be reminded of it, simply because the mind rejects negative events. We say, "I really don't want to talk about it right now" (about a drive to or from work, for example). What we're not saying is parenthetical ("...because talking about it makes me angry, and I don't want to be angry, both of which serve no useful purpose.) In other words, the authors have crammed so much psychological information into "Road Rage" I feel it would now push them away, meaning that the only drivers left who would be attracted to it are those, now or formerly, are actually addicted to an aggressive driving style (yes, I was). Believe it or not, this is precisely what aggressive drivers and road ragers need. What would have really reinforced the authors' ideas is a section on the implication and interaction of physiological factors, such as too much caffeine too quickly, low blood sugar, insufficient dietary protein (all of which affect neurotransmitter production and neurological receptor sites) that are directly responsible for the aggressive thoughts and behaviors they write about.

I would still recommend this book, however, as a "prescription" or as required remedial reading if I were a police officer or a judge who just imposed a fine on a ticketed driver. Denial is thick. It will take some time for the ideas to sink in, but they will sink in. I am impressed at the detail given to self-evaluation of driver behaviors. So you really don't need to be a member of a QDC (Quality Driving Circle) to implement the suggestions in this book. To sit and talk with others in a group setting about driving is strangely reminiscent of an AA meeting, thereby implying that one does not want to be labeled an aggressive driving addict. But being obsessed with driving, whether we like it or not, is the only way to prevent needless accidents, injuries and property damage. "Road rage" is highly recommended for drivers of all ages (might be difficult for readers under 18: reading level). So far, this is one of the best books available on the psychological aspects of automobile driving.

Invaluable reading for anger management studies.
What are the symptoms of road rage and how can aggressive driving patterns and encounters be halted? In Road Rage and Aggressive Driving, the authors trace these problems to childhood roots and attitudes toward the law: they argue that road rage is experienced by most drivers, and tell how to use self-tests to estimate personal road rage tendencies. A three-step program to transform drivers from aggressive to supportive drivers is included.

Driving You Crazy
Road Rage is a winner! It will resonate with readers who have been threatened on the road, trapped in a car with an irrational driver, or who want to shake off learned habits of driver aggression. It gives us a peek at the distorted reasoning behind driver aggression, as well as larger implications for our auto-centered culture. It is a fascinating, accessible, and well-documented look at the rapid and sometimes bizarre evolution of our experience on the road.
